Dark Horse

Dark Horse were formed in 1995, and dance Border Morris. This style of Morris dancing comes from the English/Welsh borders and involves lots of shouting and clashing sticks.

We wear tatter coats and top hats decorated with feathers. Our colours are inspired by the burgundy, brown and black of the Thames Barges and the white of Maldon Sea Salt. We paint our faces red and black both as a disguise and to make ourselves look more dramatic!

Our dances are our own creation, with Maldon’s heritage reflected in the names of the dances. Hence we have dances such as: ‘Tacking up River’, ‘Hythe Quay’ and ‘Iron Works’.
